Burnet County Democrats Show Spirit Through Ladies’ Club

Burnet County Democrats Show Presence Through Ladies’ Club

The Burnet County Democratic Party in the Texas Highland Lakes area continued its formally adopted motto of “Be proud.  Be loud.  Be Democrat!” as the Highland Lakes Democratic Women sponsored an information booth at another fun day in downtown Marble Falls, Texas.  Again, the smiles say it all!!!  Shown above running the booth is Highland Lakes Democratic Women member Charla Hester.  The opposition party can just keep being jealous, because Democrats know how to have fun while still sharing a serious message.  One more local Democrat asked specifically to be quoted::

“I keep getting all these calls from Republican campaigns and I keep telling them you are wasting your breath.  My Daddy ALWAYS voted Democrat.  I have always voted Democratic Party.  AND I will always vote Democrat!”

The local Democratic Party area clubs considered this a trial run for organizing a presence next week in Marble Falls Johnson Park at 2:30 PM on Saturday when the entire South side of the park will be filled with Democratic Party activities.

Texans Defend Women’s Rights and Equality – “Women will Remember in November”

Rally: Saturday, April 28, 20012 in Austin and all State Capitols

The Texas chapter of Unite Women will hold a rally and voter registration event April 28th at 4:00 PM at the State Capitol building in Austin. Similar events are taking place in Washington D.C. and all state capitols. Buses are coming to Austin from Houston and Dallas as well as carpools from all over Texas. There will be 31 deputy voter registrars from: Dallas, Tarrant, Harris, Williamson, Bell, Smith, Henderson, Denton, Caldwell, Coryel, Bexar and Travis counties, plus mail-in forms for everyone else.

This rally is just a starting point. The goal is simple – replace all anti-woman lawmakers so we can bring fairness and sanity back to Texas.

Speakers for this event are:

Representative Dawnna Dukes

Reverend Jim Rigby, St. Andrews Presbyterian Church, Austin

The rally will begin with a “Mass Upload and Tweetathon” which will include the crowd in Austin and supporters wherever they may be, plus a constant event recap flow to our Facebook page.

Going forward, Unite Women – Texas will act as a gathering point for people concerned with issues that impact women exclusively or predominantly and we will join with others in Texas to educate, register voters and to replace lawmakers who vote against women’s freedom and equality, regardless of their party.

Garage Sales Democratic Dynamos

Garage Sale Nets $310 for Scholarships Fund

Imagine getting together with group of six to eight friends and spending the day laughing and visiting and shopping and eating. And at the same time imagine during all this fun, you were earning money for a good cause: the education of Texas school children.

Well that’s how we do it in the Democratic party. The following letter from the organizer, Shirley Schmidt, gives the public an idea of how our day went. All the area Democratic Party groups join Shirley in the acknowledgements of a fine group of volunteers.

April 7, 2012 – Marble Falls, Texas

Thanks to all you who donated and/or volunteered all day. The Democrats garage sale was success and we cleared $310.28 today for the Scholarship Fund.

Special thanks to those volunteering all day goes to : Michael Steenbergen, Dottie Yturri, Mary Ann Raesener, Kitty Palmer, Ann Hunter, Guy Stuart, and Vicki Stuart. Additionally I give special thanks to Michael and his step-father Carl who were at the Park at 7:00 a.m. delivering two large tables. And Michael who made a return trip to pick up donated items in Meadowlakesa and the table donated for our use by Katy Gilmore. Also, Michael collected the few unsold items at the end of the day and will deliver to the Crisis Center’s Thrift Shop by Tuesday. And also do not forget at 7:00 a.m. Cristi Clement was there supporting our efforts. Cristi, my apologies for asking you to bring the pop-up tent and cement blocks to secure the tent because after you arrived we determined we could manage more effectively without the pop-up tent. Sorry for that unnecessary effort and trip. Will know better next time.

Also, thanks to Annette Ussery who donated numerous items and was at the Park at 7:00 a.m. with a truckload of donations. Then later Charlotte Broadway and her husband delivered numerous boxes filled with donations, next Cynthia and Joe Chisholm arrived with a truck load of “stuff” including a computer desk, office supplies, multi use tables, puzzles and etc. Dottie Yturri was planning a personal garage sale and arrived before 7:00 a.m. with a load of stuff already priced and stayed to volunteer all day. Dottie’s experience pricing items for a “garage sales” was invaluable.

Participation in the Garage Sales today was a short notice. But we all had fun and felt it was a big success. We reserved the same spot for the next CityWide Garage Sales on Saturday, October 6th. Begin setting aside things for this next sale and make it an even larger event.

Also, today we collected contact information with individuals formerly associated with local Democrats.

My thanks to each one of you for your part in making the day a success with your volunteer hours and donations.

Thanks,
Shirley Schmidt

The Garage Sale hours are from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.  However,  buyers generally arrive early.  If you have donations, it would be helpful if you could arrive in Johnson Park before 8:30 a.m.  Also, if you are making a donation, please let me know so we have some idea what to expect.  We have individuals bringing tables for set up and display of the donations.  Funds raised from the “garage sale” will be split between the Burnet County Democrats and the Highland Lakes Democratic Women Scholarship Fund.

If you plan to bring donations for sale or can volunteer at the Booth on Saturday, please let me know and I will advise you of the location of the the Democrats’ Booth.

Hill Country Democratic Women to Meet at Hidden Falls

The Hghland Lakes Democratic Women, the local Chapter of the State organization called Texas Democratic Women, will meet at 11:00 AM Thursday May 22nd 2012 at Hidden Falls Restaurant in Meadowlakes Texas.  The featured speaker will be Justice Bob Gammage.

Bob Gammage

Robert Alton "Bob" Gammage

Justice Bob Gammage is a native of Houston, Texas, and a graduate of Houston’s Milby High School. He worked his way through college, graduate school and law school and earned degrees from Del Mar College, the University of Corpus Christi, Sam Houston State University, the University of Texas School of Law and the University of Virginia School of Law. He also completed advanced legal and judicial education programs at the New York University School of Law, the Harvard Law School, Northwestern University

School of Law, the National Judicial College, and the U.S. Naval Justice School. You can download Bob’s educational and legal resume here. You can also download Judge Gammage’s Professional and Civic Resume here.
Bob served with the U.S. Army Infantry Human Research Unit and the Korea Military Advisory Group (KMAG), and is a Captain (Retired) in the U.S. Naval Reserve, where he served in both the Intelligence Service and the Judge Advocate General (JAG) Corps.
An attorney in private practice in Houston from 1969-1979, Bob represented the Bay Area and south and southwest Harris County in the Texas House of Representatives; south and southwest Harris County and all of Fort Bend County in the Texas Senate and the Texas Constitutional Convention; and the Bay Area, south and southwest Harris County, south Waller County and all of Brazoria and Fort Bend Counties in the United States House of Representatives.
In the Texas House he was a member of the corruption fighting “Dirty Thirty”, who put their political lives on the line to take on the state’s political leadership and whose efforts led to a massive turnover in state political office holders. As a state senator he fought successfully for the adoption of open government reforms and helped make major progress on human rights and consumer and health care legislation in Texas. While in congress Bob won major battles for his constituents, including, among other items, funding for the Children’s Nutrition Research Center at Texas Children’s/St. Luke’s Hospitals, funding for NASA’s weightless training facility at the Johnson Space Center, the preservation of Ellington Field as federal training facility for NASA’s flight operations and crew training mission, the preservation of what was then the Space Center Hospital in Nassau Bay, and the nation’s first federal/state experimental geothermal well in Brazoria County to explore for new energy resources.
After congress, Bob served briefly as an Assistant Attorney General of Texas and as a Special Consultant to the U.S. Department of Energy before re-entering private law practice in Austin. In 1982, Bob was elected to the Texas Court of Appeals from the 24-county Austin/Central Texas area, and was re-elected without opposition in 1988. He won statewide election to the Supreme Court of Texas in November 1990. As an appellate judge he was noted for his opinions in defense of civil liberties and dealt with all four of the Edgewood public school finance cases.
In 1995, Bob decided to return to private life, to practice law, teach and try to do some writing, and on September 1, 1995, after exactly 13 years on the bench and nearly 25 years in public life, he resigned from the Supreme Court of Texas. In addition to his legal and educational work, he serves as a legal ethics consultant, and is an active certified mediator and arbitrator.
Bob and his wife, Lynda Hallmark, currently make their home in Lynda’s Texas Hill Country hometown of Llano.
